Uppingham Village Graveyard and Art School             1965

AMA first started art lessons at Uppingham School in the autumn of 1964, during the following summer term he was allowed to try painting in oils; this is his first attempt.

The setting of the school's art department was indeed the original Old School building dating from the 1580s, understandably built next door to the village church. Pupils going to art lessons would walk through the graveyard containing graves up to almost 400 years of age. Consequently, a lot of pictures produced in the art lessons contained gravestones which were fortunately easy to paint, and It was all very beautiful. Pity AMA didn't know how to paint trees.

Oil on specially prepared paper.
